The short version: a party boat sells individual tickets on a shared boat with a fixed route. A private yacht charter is the whole yacht, captain and crew for your group only, on your schedule. If the day is a celebration, privacy and control are usually worth it.
How they compare
- Who is on board. Party boat: strangers, often dozens of them. Private yacht: only your guests.
- Schedule and route. Party boat: fixed departure and route. Private yacht: you choose the time, length and stops, and your captain confirms the route for the weather.
- Music, food and drinks. Party boat: their playlist and bar. Private yacht: your music, and you can bring your own food and drinks or add catering.
- Price. Party boat: a per-person ticket. Private yacht: one price for the boat. Split across a group, a private charter often costs less per person than you would expect, with nothing shared.
- Occasions. Party boats suit a casual night out. Private yachts suit birthdays, bachelorettes, proposals, family days and client events.
Check that it is legal, either way
Any boat that takes paying passengers needs a licensed captain. U.S. Coast Guard rules limit an uninspected vessel to six paying passengers. A typical charter yacht carrying more than six paying passengers must be inspected and hold a Certificate of Inspection, and a chartered vessel may not carry more than 12 passengers without one. Ask before you pay. Our guide on avoiding charter scams has a full checklist.
