Miami sandbars: a guide to sandbar days by yacht

Turquoise water, music, and a floating crowd. Here is what each sandbar is like, when to go, and how to plan the day.

A sandbar is a shallow stretch of sand in the bay where boats anchor and guests wade, swim, and float in waist-deep water. It is one of the most fun ways to spend a day on a yacht in South Florida, as long as you pick the right spot and time.

Haulover Sandbar

Where: inside Haulover Inlet, near Haulover Beach in North Miami Beach. Reachable only by boat.

What it's like: the most famous party sandbar in Miami, with shallow, gently sloping water and food boats that pull up selling snacks and drinks. Weekends and holidays get very busy, with music and a lively adult crowd.

Best for: birthdays, bachelorettes, and groups who want energy.

Nixon Sandbar

Where: Biscayne Bay, just west of Key Biscayne, near Hurricane Harbor.

What it's like: clear water and sandy shallows with boats anchored close together. Floats and coolers everywhere. Busy on weekends and holidays.

Best for: groups who want a festive day with skyline views on the ride over.

Lake Boca Sandbar

Where: Lake Boca Raton, just inside the Boca Inlet, north of Fort Lauderdale.

What it's like: a well-known weekend gathering spot for boaters in Palm Beach County, with calm water and a social atmosphere.

Best for: groups departing from Fort Lauderdale who want a longer cruise.

When to go

  • Weekdays and mornings are calmer. Weekends and holidays are when the sandbars are busiest.
  • Tides matter. Water depth changes through the day; your captain plans the timing.
  • Plan 4 to 6 hours so you have time to cruise, anchor, swim, and come back for sunset.

Good to know

  • Larger yachts often anchor in deeper water nearby. Your captain decides where it is safe to anchor.
  • Bring water, reef-safe sunscreen, hats, and something to float on. Ask us about water toys.
  • Protect the bay: avoid seagrass beds and take all trash back with you.
  • Sandbars shift over time, and conditions change with weather, so the final plan is always the captain's call.
